Nellmapius was founded by brothers Richard and William, who grew up on a family-run dairy farm in South Africa before moving to the UK in 2017. The farm was started by serial entrepreneur Alois Nellmapius, who transformed the land into a functioning farm. In 1895, it was acquired by Johannes van der Byl with capital from outside investors. Over time, Johannes worked to buy them out, eventually owning the farm outright. The farm, as well as further businesses that have grown out of the farm, are still owned and operated by the van der Byl family today.

Growing up in this environment, we learnt first-hand the dedication required for an owner-operated business, and the benefits it can bring to one’s family and community. This motivated us to do the same. Irene Farm and associated businesses prosper because of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the man who started it all, and the commitment and hard work of four generations of van der Byls.

For us, the name Nellmapius honours these values. It both inspires us, and serves as a reminder of our roots - the farm where we grew up.
